The Soviet stranglehold on Latvia to release its hold towards the end of the late 1980’s. During this time several political organizations started to protest for the restoration of national independence. The Baltic nations joined hands in a 600km human chain, called the “Baltic way”, to demonstrate unity in the face of adversity. In 1991 the pro-communist political organizations tried to restore the Soviet power with the use of force. In January of 1991 the inhabitants of Kuldiga erected several improvised barricades made using a myriad of materials including cars, trucks and concrete blocks. After a period of clashes, in September of that year, Latvia was recognized independent by the Soviet Union.
